Neutrino Mass: theory, data and interpretation
نویسنده
چکیده
In these two lectures I describe first the theory of neutrino mass and then discuss the implications of recent data (including 708–day data Super–Kamiokande data) which strongly indicate the need for neutrino conversions to account for the solar and atmospheric neutrino observations. I also mention the LSND data, which provides an intriguing hint. The simplest ways to reconcile all these data in terms of neutrino oscillations invoke a light sterile neutrino in addition to the three active ones. Out of the four neutrinos, two are maximally-mixed and lie at the LSND scale, while the others are at the solar mass scale. These schemes can be distinguished at neutral-current-sensitive solar & atmospheric neutrino experiments. I discuss the simplest theoretical scenarios, where the lightness of the sterile neutrino, the nearly maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing, and the generation of ∆m⊙ & ∆matm all follow naturally from the assumed lepton-number symmetry and its breaking. Although the most likely interpretation of the present data is in terms of neutrino-mass-induced oscillations, one still has room for alternative explanations, such as flavour changing neutrino interactions, with no need for neutrino mass or mixing. Such flavour violating transitions arise in theories with strictly massless neutrinos, and may lead to other sizeable flavour non-conservation effects, such as μ → e+γ, μ− e conversion in nuclei, unaccompanied by neutrino-less double beta decay.

Neutrino masses and oscillations
I summarize the status of three–neutrino oscillations that follow from combining the relevant world’s data. The discussion includes the small parameters α ≡ ∆m2 sol /∆m2 atm and sin2 θ13, which characterize the strength of CP violation in neutrino oscillations, the impact of oscillation data on the prospects for probing the absolute scale of neutrino mass in ββ0ν and the robustness of the neutr...
متن کاملNeutrino Mixing and Oscillations in 1999 and beyond A
The interpretation of the existing experimental eveidences for oscillations of neu-trinos in schemes with three and four neutrino mixing is reviewed. Forms of the lepton mixing matrix allowed by the neutrino oscillation data are considered. The possible neutrino mass spectra compatible with the observations are analyzed. The possibility to obtain information about the neutrino mass spectrum fro...
متن کاملSearch for Neutrino Mass and Dark Matter in Underground Experiments
In this lecture we shall discuss two central problems of particle physics and cosmology. The neutrino mass is one of the key quantities in grand unified theories, and at the same time candidate for hot dark matter in the Universe. Supersymmetry is regarded as the most natural extension of present particle physics theories. The lighest SUSY particle, usually assumed to be the neutralino, is the ...
متن کاملThree-generation neutrino mixing and LSND dark matter neutrinos
The reported signal at the LSND experiment, when interpreted as neutrino mixing with δm = 6 eV, provides evidence for neutrinos with a cosmologically significant mass. However, attempts to reconcile this interpretation of the experiment with other hints about neutrino properties require a (sterile) fourth neutrino and/or an “inverted” neutrino mass hierarchy. An interpretation of the LSND exper...

In this talk I discuss what I believe are the most interesting recent developments in physics beyond the Standard Model. After some initial comments on neutrino masses, I discuss the status of low-energy supersymmetry and finally turn to describing some recent work in theories with extra spatial dimensions. 1 Neutrinos The most concrete indication for the existence of physics beyond the Standar...
